Superintendent of Bridgeport l, Mr. Zac Shutler, in partnership with College of Education Graduate Program faculty, created a special topics graduate course on Leadership Studies for educators in Bridgeport City Public Schools. The course meets weekly, and participating educators have assigned readings, two assigned books, discussions, and class activities. Supporting the course design is Dr. Leann Elkins, Coordinator of Graduate Education, and supporting instructional planning and class discussion is Associate Professor, Dr. Bill Baroank.
"At the Bridgeport School District, our goal is to create professional development opportunities for our educators that go beyond pedagogy. We wanted to create a professional development course where our teachers and administrators could share their thoughts and ideas on leadership with the ultimate goal of the course leading to: an understanding of why we chose our profession, a discussion of strategies, a shared understanding of our experiences, and research around complex topics related to leadership. Devising a course for educators to develop their leadership capacity is an avenue that will create an enhanced educational environment for our students," commented Mr. Shutler.
"The partnership with WLU and the expertise of Dr. Bill Baronak has brought our vision of the leadership course into reality. The rich discussions on leadership Bill has facilitated with our educators has afforded us the opportunity to become a closer team. It is a a relevant professional development experience that has fostered a sense of unity within the participants. Our district looks forward to working with WLU on future endeavors. It has been a professionally and personally rewarding experience, explained Shutler.
