District 9 Solo and Ensemble Competition

On Saturday, February 16, 2019 members of the Bridgeport High School Choir traveled to Marietta College to compete in the Ohio Music Education Association’s annual District 9 Solo and Ensemble Competition. The students competed for the first time in the chamber ensemble category. The ensemble sang Marta Keen’s choral selection, Homeward Bound. Members of the choir also competed as soloists. Mary Grendel, 12th grade, received an excellent rating for her performance of Ave Maria. Maddy McMahon, 11th grade, received an excellent rating for her performance of Go ‘Way from My Window. Taylor Duncan, 11th grade, received an excellent rating for her performance of Danny Boy. Sarah Bloom, 10th grade, also received an excellent rating for her performance of Danny Boy. Brooklyn Edgell, 10th grade, received an excellent rating for her performance of the song If. Hallee Lewis, 9th grade, received a superior rating for her performance of the song If. Ty Schambach, 11th grade, also received a superior rating for his performance of Danny Boy. Lewis and Schambach were both offered scholarships to attend Marietta College and participate in their music department. The two were also invited to perform at the college’s 8th Annual Honor High School Recital which will be held on Saturday, March 2nd in McDonough Auditorium on the Marietta College campus. Students participating in the recital could earn cash prizes and additional scholarships. When asked about his experience in the competition, Schambach said “This was my first year competing at Solo and Ensemble. The judges feedback will help me improve my musicianship and grow as a vocalist. I am looking forward to competing again next year.” The students are under the direction of Bridgeport High School teachers Sarah Zonders and Ashley Krieger. Wheeling resident, Tonie Sivert, accompanied the students on piano.
